Why Thanh Ha Ceramic Is Special?
The process of making pottery in Thanh Ha Pottery Village in Hoi An is very strict. Thank to the talented hands of skilled and high-tech craftsman, beautiful works are produced. The clay is chosen carefully, then sculpted, cut thinly from 3 to 4 times, then use the people’s force to step on over and over again to improve the connection.

After the soil has been carefully trained, then it is split into different parts before starting to shape. Before you embark on shaping, you have to polish, especially it needs two people to do (usually, women will do this). In this process, there is a person standing on one leg, the other leg is used to kick on the spinning wheel and use both hands to make the soil. The other person uses the technique to take the soil and place it on the spinning table, then roll it into a cocoon and use a scallop, ring, and rag to shape the product.

When you’ve finished shaping the products, bring them out to dry in the sunshine. Dry pottery will be brought for stamping, decorated with many unique strokes of Thanh Ha Pottery Village, Hoi An.

Finally, after the pottery is carefully dried in the sunshine, put it in the furnace to heat. The fire burns for about 7–8 hours, when there is no smoke, it starts to burn so loudly that until the fire stopped, the craftsman uses “trial pottery” to try. Stop burning, break the furnace door wider so that the furnace cools down quickly, and then take the products out after about 12 hours. Average time for a pottery furnace is about 15 days.

According to the long-time craftsman in Thanh Ha, the process of making a true pottery of Thanh Ha requires a lot of effort and dedication, as well as the skill of the craftsman’s hand to blow the most essential soul into the land. From the process of choosing the soil, making the soil to modeling on the spinning table, the hands shape as if the mind focus on each rotation of the spinning table, then until they have the final product, there are many stages which are more sophisticated, meticulous and elaborate. When the product has been reshaped, it continues to experience the sun and ink, then taken into the furnace. The most important things of firing process are the fire, the fire measure and the time which must be accurate or else it will damage the whole batch of pottery, how much effort will become useless.

Is a mere mile from the Old Town, so if you’re able, bikes are the way to go. The ride is a lovely, easy pedal, along the Thu Bon River that takes less than half an hour. Take Hung Vuong Street out of town until you see the river on your left. At the fork, keep left. Continue for about 1 km and turn left at Pham Phan — the Terracotta Pottery Park and Pottery Village are about 15 metres further down on the left. Once there, park your bike along the fence, or if walking between sights isn’t your thing, ride around the village.

A private boat from the Old Town takes about half an hour, and it’s likely a lot cooler than some of the other modes of transport to the village. The boats leave at all times of the day from along the river in the Old Town then head downstream, giving visitors a unique view of Hoi An. Prices are negotiable, but we were quoted US$ 21.7 (or VND 500,000 VND) for 3 people or US$ 6.5 (or VND 150,000) for one.
